ARTEMIS

Because the abdomen is filled with air during laparoscopic surgery, the pressure differential between the inside and outside of the abdomen causes current medical trocars to slip out during surgery.  This outward slippage necessitates reinsertion, which may cause extra trauma to the abdomen wall.

The Artemis trocar was designed to eliminate slippage during laparoscopic surgery with the use of shape-memory Nitinol ribbons, which form a radial "catch".  The surgeon uses an easily deployable obturator to straighten the Nitinol ribbons during insertion and removal.
